Number Rods and Numerals - Exercises 2 & 3
EXERCISE 2:
- The exercise can be done on another day in reverse. The
teacher will show the group a numeral and the children find the
corresponding quantity. The two are placed together on the mat.
EXERCISE 3:
- An individual exercise for children who have joined in the group
exercise.
-
- The rods are placed on the mat and the numerals at the bottom
right of the mat.
-
- The teacher asks the child to find the "one" rod. She shows
him how to place it towards the bottom left of the mat. She asks
him to find the numeral "1". She shows him how to put it against
the "one" rod. She then asks him to find the "two" rod. She
shows him how to place it above and touching the "one" rod with their
left sides even and the red ends on the left. She asks him to
find the numeral "2" and to place it on the second section of the two
rod. The teacher continues to ask the child to select the rods in
sequence, placing them together, with the red ends even on the left
side.
- She next asks him to find the corresponding numeral and to place
it against the rod. If the child obviously understands the
exercise, he can be left to finish alone. When the exercise is
done, the numerals appear in proper sequence from left to right.
