The Number Rods - Exercise 1

The child can have the number rods to arrange in order of length.

These are placed on the mat with red ends on the left, lined up evenly.  The arrangement is exactly the same as for the red rods.

This exercise gives the child the opportunity to handle the rods for himself and to compare their lengths.  Some children realize that these rods are the same lengths as the red rods and may spontaneously take both sets of rods to the mat for the purpose of comparing them.  This shows intelligence.  The teacher does not show the child the comparison between the two sets, however.
