How to String a Dulcimer

Start the slideshow to see step by step illustrations of how to string the first string on a dulcimer. All the other strings are done the same way for their respective positions.

Loop the string over the end pin.

Make sure the edge of the bridge slants with the peak on the fret side.

Thread the string through the nut.

Rotate the hole on the first post to a one O'clock position.

Thread the string down through the hole on the post.

Wrap the string back around the post and draw it up between you and the string.

Lap the string over itself and tuck it down through the space next to the wood.

Draw the string down tight so that it pulls against the incoming string.

Turn the post so the hole turns counter clockwise.

Keep turning the post so the incoming string overlaps over the part you pull.

Check that the string is locked by overlapping itself. This prevents slipping.
