3. TOUCH PAIRING TABLETS
Tablets of wood all the same size mounted with 4 papers of different textures, two of each texture. A blindfold.

Note: Only the finest sandpaper may be used. The child's fingers are delicate and coarse sandpapers are unpleasant to touch and should not be used.

PURPOSE:

1) To make the child aware of different textures
2) Education of the hand

AGE:

2 and 1/2 to 5 years

PRESENTATION:

If the child has clean hands of normal temperature, his sense of
touch will be at its best and the material will be kept clean. So,
the teacher should have the child wash his hands and rub the
finger tips gently on the towel when drying to enhance sensitivity.
The teacher should do the same.

BOARD 1 - ROUGH AND SMOOTH BOARD

The teacher shows the child how to hold his wrist up lightly and
feel the two different textures on the board, first one and then
the other. She does not let him press heavily as he will numb the
nerves in the finger tips and will not be able to feel the
differences in texture.

If he feels without seeing, his sense of touch will be enhanced.
So, when he understands the exercise, the teacher shows him how to
do the exercise blindfolded. If he does not like the blindfold the
teacher does not insist on its use. Instead, she suggests that the
exercise be done with his eyes closed.

BOARD 2 - TEXTURE BOARD

This board is given in the same way when the child is ready for it.

TOUCH PAIRING TABLETS:

The teacher lays the tablets on the table in front of the child in
mixed order but no over-lapping.

The teacher shows the child how to feel a tablet lightly several
times and then to feel others until he finds one with the same
textures. She then shows him how to place the matching tablets
together on the table so they are separated from the group of
unmatched tablets.

When the child understands that he must find the matching pairs by
touch, he wears the blindfold and continues to work on his own.

SELF-CORRECTION:

Pairing Tablets: when the blindfold is removed the child can see
if the pairs are correctly matched by seeing the slight difference
in the color of the papers used.

Note: When introducing the blindfold for the first time in class,
it is wise to choose an extrovert, a child the teacher knows is
always ready to try new things.

VOCABULARY:

Rough - Smooth
